About Manuia Books

Alice Hunt
When the year 2000 rolled over, and everyone was celebrating, I realised that I held in my memory a collection of stories, histories, and all kinds of 'hand-me-downs' from the previous century, the 20th.

I was born in 1925, the only daughter of Florence and Jim Fleck. Florence was born in Samoa, and Jim in London, and there was no-one else to record their life-stories.

Over the years all the family papers and photos came into my care. Many papers and artifacts have been donated to local Archives, Te Manawa and Te Papa Museums, but what I kept was enough to give me many hours of reading, scanning and preparing for family publications.

With such an extensive family (present count is 41) there have been many events to record in story-books for the children, and the real history of the family, English and Samoan, has been appreciated by all.

Now I can rest happily in the knowledge that as much as possible has been put into print and is available for future generations.

There are still a few projects 'on the go' and sometimes I wonder if I will ever be finished. I am thankful that I have lived into the era of the computer which has made it possible to write these stories. It would have been an arduous task on a typewriter or in longhand.

Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. Neil Postman

So carry the messages, children, with a glance at the past now and then. You are all very special to me.
